Introduction
Goethe said about Sicily:
“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.”
(Desmond, Will D. (2020). Hegel’s Antiquity. Oxford University Press. p. 10. ISBN 978-0-19-257574-6. )
Frederick II is reported to have said:
“I don’t envy God’s paradise,
because I am very satisfied with living in Sicily”.
( anamericaninrome.com/2019/03/best-quotes-about-sicily/ www.italia.it/en/discover-italy/sicily.html )
I made a first trip to Sicily in October 2019 with my car together with a friend.
Here I tell the story of the journey a little at a time. Refresh to see the latest additions. Thank you.

Conclusion

Lipari – Taormina via Milazzo e Novara di Sicilia
First leg of the journey. After leaving Lipari at 7 with the ship we left Milazzo. Via the motorway we arrived in Falcone where we continued on the spectacular provincial road to Novara di Sicilia where we had lunch at the Castello restaurant.
What surprised me was the quality of the road. There were no potholes and unevenness in the road like on the roads in Lipari. It was a pleasure to travel this road with the car. We also met several cyclists and motorcyclists who, like us, went up to Novara.
We ate very well at the Castello restaurant which is located in the ruins of the old castle of Novara di Sicilia.
After an hour’s break we continued towards Taormina. To get there you need to climb up to the Madrazzi pass which is at an altitude of 1100 meters above the sea. On the road up we had the company of cows grazing peacefully on the sides, most likely accustomed to the passage of cars.
Davanti a noi si vedevano le punte più alte.
After a short break in Madrazzi we began the descent towards Taormina.
Shortly after Madrazzi, however, there was a road that led up to a small wind farm. We couldn’t not go.

Da Taormina Siracusa via Acireale e Acitrezza
This is a church next to the Duomo (see number 5) whose name we don’t remember.
Acireale has a beautiful Cathedral. We were lucky to find a parking space on the side (see number 4)
We got a lot of culture inside.
Il duomo si trova su un meridiano.
The cathedral is located on a meridian.
They also put different sizes there, including the Sicilian palm. The nave was incredibly beautiful.
e abbiamo ammirato queste due illustrazioni ispirate dalla genesi.
Poi siamo andati a mangiare in un ristorante con cucina tipica di Acireale. pasta com cavolo di trunzo )
In Syracuse we spent a couple of nights resting in a B&B of dear friends in the south of Ortigia near the Maniace castle.

Excursion to Scicli
After a nice journey we arrived in Scicli around lunch time.
A nice tavern in the center became the first stop.
The owner of the tavern offered us a liqueur with a very particular taste. A green liqueur made with fennel seeds and bay leaves. In Enna we bought the seeds and on our return we made this liqueur with a Scicli flavour.

Conclusion
This was the first trip to Sicily. A beautiful experience. However, the torrential rains in Noto and Avola worried us. Next time maybe we’ll take the motorway from Taormina directly to Agrigento.
I don’t like driving on motorways. I can’t do without the nice trip via Novara di Sicilia, perhaps with a night there.
