Winter time/trekking season stay
The rooms are equipped with pellet and wood oven and has AC heating. So no cold rooms. The day temperature wintertime is around 8-18 Celsius. Very seldom we have a temp drop down to zero Celsius.
T
Staying with us in wintertime (that means from September to June), you can make long walks and trekking on Lipari, Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea, Salina, and Stromboli.
Read about winter/summer trekking below

Summertime stay
From the mountain in this photo above (mount Gallina) you see the house and its neighborhood, like in this Gimped photo below:
The house is seen on Google maps ( Click here ).
Being 50 meters above sea level in a countryside/rural area outside the village, you can enjoy our house even at 30-40 Celsius. It never becomes so hot as in the village, thanks to refreshing sea breeze winds.
The house has thick walls and AC in two sleeping rooms. This helps us to keep a good climate also inside.

Trekking summertime is possible after 17:00
Trekking is recommendable a short time before sunset or early in the morning. I can help you make sunset swimming and/or enjoy sunsets on the west side of Lipari “Valle Muria” (above) and Punta Palmeto (zoom in on the photo below! )
During the day it is however possible to do a trekking in the valley/canyon of Santa Lucia, below the house.
Due to the jungle-like vegetation (high trees), it is possible to be in the valley/canyon of Santa Lucia (see photos below) during the hot mid-day. One may have to use mosquito repellants, however.
Have you wondered about the name “Casa svedese”? Below is an introduction and House history that explains the name.
Swedish care of hygiene and environment.
The rural area position of the house and its history and owner’s background, made the owner prioritize hygiene and the care of environmental resources, the Swedish way.
We recommend this house for guests who accept to live in a house with Swedish hygiene and environmental tradition.
Read more below in recommendations.

House History
The house is a typical Aeolian house. It originally belonged to a farmer who emigrated to Australia in the 1950s.
- The house was in a state of neglect when it was bought by a Swedish family in 1967. The ruin was rebuilt and made habitable.
- In 1974 a family member, artist, dancer, and painter settled there.
- The Swedish owner has a bachelor in microbiology and pedagogy, from Göteborg.
The House was renovated and extended in 2019 by the Swedish owner, following Swedish hygiene and environmental standards. Read more in the recommendations The house today consists of two apartments, the first of three rooms, a bathroom and two kitchens, one indoor and one outdoor.
The second is a single-room apartment with a bathroom. This is where the host lives.
Around the house, there is a large terrace and a garden of about 2000 square meters.

Prevention. health measures
The owner is senior, takes flu vaccine every year, follows security measures (mask, etc, when needed) and has succeeded so far in avoiding covid. The owner does not want to expose the guests to risks. For this reason, the owner follows Airbnb and Swedish, safety procedures between guest stays, in addition to local laws and guidelines.

House recommendations
Background
The house is surrounded by gardens and is located on the border with the countryside of the Vizzina district. Due to its location and lack of proper roads, heavy vehicles such as water and purge trucks have no access. We don’t have a connection to the drainage net.
Municipal water arrives via the water mains and fills the house’s tanks only on weekends.
The previous owner of the House artist, dancer and painter and mother of the actual owner, loved Lipari and took great care of the environment.
Care and hygiene knowledge
The owner knows that:
- Toilet paper consumption contributes to the actual climate crisis ( www.nrdc.org/experts/jennifer-skene/toilet-paper-driving-climate-crisis-every-flush )
- “While water washes the feces thoroughly, tissue paper tends to move it along the direction of wiping”. ( read more )
- A bidet requires more space and separate disinfection.
- 75% of all homes in Japan have a Washlet ( www.australianbidet.com.au ).
- For women, to avoid UTIs, it is recommended to clean from front to back ( obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com ).
- Washlets have the disadvantage that you can not control the direction of the shower. This can be done with a bidet shower.
In restructuring the house in 2021, the owner has because of these facts and pieces of knowledge, therefore chosen to follow the Scandinavian model, prioritizing a large separate shower area and removing among others the bidet in the WC.
An Italian family who has traveled abroad to Sweden and Japan had no problem with our WC with a bidet shower.
Since 1998, we have mostly had guests from abroad (Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden) in our House.
The owners hope to receive more Italian guests.
water saving and WC hygiene recommendations:
- Avoid as much as possible use of toilet paper, using instead the bidet shower and drying with household paper.
Household paper is later reused by the owner. - Do not let the water run while soaping in the shower.
- Make sure that rinsing water in the kitchen, shower, and bathroom can be recycled
Rinsing water is used to:- soak dishes,
- rinse plastic and metal (to not invite ants and cockroaches)
- watering plants and trees.
AC dehumidifier mode
We ask our guests to avoid cooling mode as cooling mode makes the vapor condense on walls and surfaces in the house, like in the shower.
Please ask the owner
any question or about a special need you have.
The owner helps you to:
- washe dishes for you.
- take care of the rinse water to water plants and trees.
Thank you for your collaboration.
.
Garden access and harvesting
The house is actually a kind of agriturismo. But we have no animals bigger than bees and cats
If you do not want to relax on our terrace you are welcome to be in our big garden, relax in the shadow of our apricot and lemon trees or why not?
harvest and enjoy among others:
- vegetables, like lettuce and squash (not in August),
- Wild plants like:
- Borago officinalis (Winter and spring)
ficus indica (in July, August),

Guestbook
We have guest greetings from1998. Since 2017 we are in Airbnb. At your request we can share images from the guestbook pages.
Airbnb have said this bout the house and its host. I keep their identity private.
Solarium
We are not allowed to have a swimming pool. Only hotels can build these.
But we have a solarium with a nice bathtub, that you may enjoy during the day and sunset—ideal for small children and a playground area.
The solarium dressing cabin is used as a sauna in wintertime.

Trekking
A trekking site
The owner is a co-founder of the Lipari trekking group Greens.
An Italian young guest of “Casa svedese”, found a great site with a pdf describing 10 paths published in 1979.
These are trekkings that can be done by combining a bus trip from Lipari.
Click here to download the pdf.
European trails
The same guest also informed me about the Komoot app on komoot.com. now has an excellent Trailview page with itineraries on Vulcano and Lipari, marked with recommendations and comments from others who have experienced these.
You could also use Lipari as a launch island to make a great car tour on Sicily.
Check this Sicily tour description we did in October 2019
